What’s That Noise? Why Your Fridge Runs Loud in a Rental (and How to Quiet It)

Woman looking inside modern stainless steel refrigerator.A noisy refrigerator can quickly turn a quiet rental home into a source of stress. Noises coming from the fridge, like humming, banging, clicking, and buzzing, are one of the most common problems renters have with their appliances. Thankfully, several loud fridge rental issues are common or easy to fix. You can reduce the noise and make your home peaceful again if you know how to troubleshoot tenant appliances and when to call for help.

Is a Loud Fridge Normal in a Rental?

A lot of different kinds of refrigerators make noise as part of their normal operation, especially when the compressor turns on, the ice maker goes off, or the fans move air around. There may be sounds that are very quiet and hard to hear, and sounds that are a bit louder. This is still true even if the fridge works fine.
Common noises a refrigerator might be making include:

  • Humming or buzzing: Normal compressor operation
  • Clicking: Thermostat cycling or defrost timer
  • Rattling or vibrating: Parts that are loose or touching cabinets
  • High-pitched whining: Fan or motor working harder than normal

In rental homes, fridges can frequently be a bit outmoded or positioned tightly within cabinetry, both of which can amplify sound. Smaller living spaces also make noise from appliances, so if your rental is small, you may hear it more. While some fridge noise is common and projected, persistently loud or disruptive sounds may mean there is a problem that needs to be looked at. Figuring out when that is the case can help with more effective tenant appliance troubleshooting.

Causes of a Loud Fridge and Tenant Appliance Troubleshooting

Unusually loud fridge noises could have numerous causes. If you are attempting to troubleshoot a mystery noise, here are some of the most common causes of unwanted fridge noise that you can fix by yourself:

  • The Fridge Isn’t Level: Uneven flooring or incorrect leveling causes vibration. The fridge can make more noise when it bumps into cabinets or walls, or when it rocks a little. Try adjusting the fridge’s leveling feet so that it sits equally on the floor. In addition, try positioning the fridge so it doesn’t touch any nearby countertops or cabinets.
  • Dirty or Blocked Condenser Coils: When dust builds up on the coils, it blocks airflow, making the fridge work harder and making more noise. This is common in rentals where machines aren’t taken out very often. Try vacuuming out the areas behind and inside the back of your fridge, including the area under it.
  • Items Inside the Fridge Are Causing Vibration: Sounds like rattling or hitting can be caused by loose bottles, stacked containers, or items touching the fan. To reduce vibrations and rattling, try moving your things around inside.
  • An Overworked Compressor or Fan: Older refrigerators or units in warm environments may cycle more often, causing increased noise. The rubber seals around fridge doors should be checked and cleaned. If the compressor or fan seems to be on all the time, there may be air leaking out through the seals.

These easy approaches might help you quickly resolve loud fridge rental concerns. But if the noise doesn’t go away, you should call your landlord or an appliance repair professional. Do not try to repair electrical parts, fix the compressor or motor, or take out any internal parts. These types of fixes could cause injury or damage the appliance (or both), so it’s recommended to leave more serious repairs to the pros.

When to Contact Property Management About a Loud Fridge

Some fridge noises are clear signs of a serious problem that can’t be fixed, no matter how hard you try.
Reach out to your landlord or property management company instantly if you detect:

  • Grinding or screeching sounds
  • Loud knocking that won’t go away
  • The fridge doesn’t cool down properly
  • Noise is getting worse over time

For best results, document the noise, such as when and how frequently it happens, and what it sounds like. This can help maintenance diagnose the problem rapidly.

A Loud Fridge Doesn’t Have to Disrupt Your Home

Not all fridge noise is a sign of a big problem, but you shouldn’t have to deal with it all the time. Most noisy refrigerator issues can be fixed safely and easily if you know how to handle basic tenant-appliance troubleshooting and when to call for help.
